Put yourself in the shoes of the poor soul who's job it is to sift through hundreds of applications.
The attention you are likely to give to the first 10 applications is likely to be a lot higher than the last 10, if you even get that far. You probably only want to schedule 5-10 or so interviews, and once those slots are booked, the rest of the applications are on ice.
Move fast and go direct.
